A Remember Update

I want to mention today that Remember is now on Facebook and if you are a Facebook user, please become a fan. It is my hope that next spring, when new events are planned on this blog like park walks or litter pick ups that Facebook will help increase turnout.

This blog has been many things to me and has expressed many things to you, my readers. Lately, I believe that the purpose of this blog has been defined and I am excited about the possibilities Remember has in the future.

Park issues have become something of a hot button issue here in the city of Allentown and there is a constant amount of conjecture regarding the present conditions of our park and plans for our parks future. Lately controversy regarding riparian buffer installation has resurfaced on some of our other local blogs. I invite anyone who has any questions regarding the purpose or necessity of these riparian buffers to take a walk with me in Cedar Beach Parkway. I will show you why they are needed even if it means a slight sacrificing of what we have come to expect in our park system.

Regarding the Cedar Beach renovations, I initially spoke in favor of said plans. I still do not oppose the playground. I do however believe that a greater focus of nature and the ecosystems present in our parks needs to develop. The situation in Jordan Park is terrible. The walls on the creek banks need to be removed. The ancient bridge that prevents proper stream flow needs to be removed. I have stated this on here many times before and I stand by it. I have also suggested that once those structures are removed, that the bricks are used to create a monument to the WPA projects here in Allentown. Given the fact that Jordan Park was one of the first parks tackled by the WPA, I could think of nowhere more appropriate for such a monument. In coming days I will lay out the Remember plan of action that I believe should be taken by whoever wins November’s mayoral elections regarding the rest of our city parks.

Moving forward, I want to encourage my readers to comment, discuss, and get involved here on this blog. I will be glad to answer any questions you have about anything you have come across here on Remember. Thanks for reading.

andrew, we don't need a monument to the WPA, we need a commitment to maintain that which they built.

I agree. I just think it would be a good thing to do once all of that material is removed. If it ever is anyway, it should be.
